Ahh, the winter months...cooler temps, wind, storms, and decidely not the sun and fun we're used to. On the East Coast, they're always talking about winterizing so pipes don't freeze, etc. What about the West Coast? C'mon, it get's cold out here too, right? If you're in LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, or somewhere else along the coast, what do you have to do to properly winterize your home. Well, here are some tips.
Check your thermostat - Make sure it actually works because the indoor temperature might actually break below 65 overnight and you want the heat to come on. Run the heater too and make sure it works since the last time you turned it on 9 months ago for an hour.
Close windows overnight - Yup, it's finally time to close the windows and kiss fresh air good-bye. Don't worry though, you can open the windows during the day because it'll probably hit 68-70 degress on those dark winter days.
Park your car in the garage - When it gets REALLY cold overnight, like down to 50 degrees, your car might get a thin layer of frost on the windows which is really annoying. Park it in the garage to prevent that frost.
Clean out your gutters - So all the rain goes down the pipe instead of as a wall of water flowing over the patio preventing you from getting the mail.
Cover the chaise lounge - Unfortunately, it's probably not going to be warm enough to work on your tan so it's best to cover this up rather than staring at it longingly from inside the house. Don't worry, it'll still be there in the Spring.
Check the water pipes - Make sure there are no leaks! It's important that water continues to flow to the ice maker in your fridge so you have ice cubes for the margaritas you'll want to make at your New Years Party. You may also want water for the wet t-shirt contest happening that day. Just a suggestion.
OK, those are the big ones. If you have any other hot tips for winterizing on the West Coast, let me know.
