Have you ever seen a Google self-driving car?

I have.  Here's the story of the one I saw.  It was a typical Thursday commute in Silicon Valley.  I was heading northbound on Highway 280 going from Cupertino to Los Altos.  This is a 4 lane highway that meanders through the hills of the San Francisco Peninsula.  Lo and behold, I come up on a grey Toyota Prius with the words "Google Self-Driving Car" on the lower body trim.  It had a thing on the top that looked like a narrow ski rack and a camera much smaller than the ones they use for taking pictures for StreetView.

The car was in the 2nd lane and driving at exactly the speed limit.  It had a wide gap between it and the next car.  When traffic slowed, it slowed down too.  There was a driver in the driver's seat but he appeared to be doing something that looked like reading.  The car was...driving itself.

Personally, I'm impressed by these things and see the potential of what they offer.  Instead of driving, I can be doing all sorts of other things with the time I'm in the car. Why drive when I can do get some work done or whatever else I need to get done?  Plus, with the automation, I think we'll have far fewer accidents and much more efficient traffic flow.  That's just a theory on my part.

Anyway, pay attention to the roads.  Watch out for your own self-driving car sighting.

Bryan ~ I remember reading an article about this idea a couple of years ago when they were testing this, "Application", if you will over in Japan. Technology continues to improve and I look forward to the day when I can get in the Car and just tell it where to go... :)

With as much trouble as I have with my computer and with Google, I think that day will be the time I get off the roads and become a hermit.

Hi Bryan - I have not seen the car yet in person, as I think it is only licensed for road use in California.  However, I wonder if Google has started to work on driving the car in adverse conditions - fog, snow, slush, sleet, heavy rain, night etc.

Bryan - Now this is not April Fools Day yet... LOL.  I would love to see this car and see it in motion. I'd probably have a wreck watching it!  I'm going to Google it now for more details.  Very cool my friend.

Hi Bryan - I've never seen that one, but I have seen the camera cars a couple of times - I made sure to wave. I wonder how these cars will function in complicated traffic situations - it's going to be interesting watching this technology develop.

Bryan.  I think I would have exited at the first opportunity.  I think I saw something about this on one of those great news shows.  It is amazing how we have made objects so intelligent.

Bryan- We have a Prius but it's just us driving it.  I've not heard of this but that would be really helpful for some in our area... those who can no longer drive, or at least shouldn't be driving.

Cool and scary all at the same time!  I am loving technology these days.  Vacuum robots so I don't have to are great too.  :)
